Heriot-Watt University focuses on the industrial and business world. It is ranked as a top institution known for its excellence in research. The University is the UK's eighth oldest university, and began as an art school in Edinburgh in 1821 and became a university in 1966.
Heriot-Watt University has an international focus, and over one quarter of the 7000 students at the campus in Scotland come from outside of the UK. In addition to this, 10 000 students from around the world take the university's international programs.

- The main campus is in Edinburgh, set in 380 acres of parkland, to the West of Edinburgh.
- The Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels, 38 miles South of Edinburgh, where students mainly study textiles and design.
- The Dubai campus, based in Dubai's purpose-built Academic City.
- The Orkney campus, which is based in Stromness. The International Centre for Island Technology concentrates on renewable energy, particularly marine energy.
