The University of the Free State is situated in Bloemfontein – the centre of South Africa.  Bloemfontein serves as the capital of the Free State Province as well as the. Judicial Capital of South Africa.  This beautiful city is also known as the ‘City of Roses’, due to the many roses that bloom all around the city during summer.

Since 1904, UFS has grown steadily as a recognized university, with scholars who influence global growth.  Today, we have several international partnerships that contribute to a rich body of knowledge and skills, because research and learning is what you expect from an excellent university.

The vision of our Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Francis Peterson, is to grow a university that embraces diversity, inclusivity, and academic excellence that prepares graduates for the world of work by incorporating aspects of entrepreneurship training into the curricula and by focusing on the development of attributes that will increase their employability.

UFS is a research-led, student-centred and regionally engaged university, with seven Faculties, that contributes to development and social justice through the production of globally competitive graduates and knowledge.

The Postgraduate School supports postgraduate students by creating an enabling environment to excel in the pursuit of their academic quests.  This is achieved through research capacity building endeavours and funding assistance for research Masters and PhD studies.
