University of Debrecen in Hungary
The history of Debrecen’s higher education dates back to the 16th century. The Reformed College of Debrecen, established in 1538, played a central role in education, teaching in native language and spreading Hungarian culture in the region, as well as in the whole country. The College soon became the most important cultural center in the whole country, where a great number of writers, scientists and politicians were educated at.
While preserving its leading position in Hungarian higher education, by 2020 the University of Debrecen intends to become a top tier research university integrating education, research, health care and agricultural activities with an international ranking, found in the upper half, under both “Programs” and “Institutions”. By providing an educational portfolio in sync with market demands, the institution serves the labor market while answering the educational demands of the region’s socio-economic factors. Thanks to a wide variety of English language degree programs combined with an education of outstanding quality, the University of Debrecen has been successful in attracting the largest number of international students of any Hungarian higher education institution.
The university remains an active member of the international scientific community and, has developed partnerships with actors in the innovation economy. Its Research & Development activity, as demonstrated by publications, citations and income from research grants, has steadily grown and proven outstanding when compared nationally. Priority areas of research, such as molecular science; physical, computational and material science; molecular medicine; medical, health, environmental and agricultural science; linguistics, culture and bioethics, are focus areas selected for their multidisciplinary approach.These focus areas aim to provide answers to the socio-economic-scientific challenges emerging in the Human-Health-Environment areas in anticipation of demographic and global changes.
The University of Debrecen supports students’ scientific activities as a top priority and its most promising graduates are encouraged to begin their scientific careers there. The interdisciplinary network of honors colleges, embracing the whole scientific spectrum, as well as the many Students' Scientific Associations help ensure a new generation of researchers for the local, national and international scientific communities.
Scholarships & funding
Medical students:
From the second spent year in the University (BMC year excluded), excellent students may apply for a scholarship that may reach 20% of the tuition fee.
The Registrar’s Office will automatically forward the results of the students who achieved a stipend index of 4.50 or higher in the previous semester to the Committee. There is no need for the students to submit any application for the tuition fee reduction. It is the student’s responsibility to check the grade average of his/her closed semester before the registration period.
Non-medical students:
From the 2nd year of their full degree studies onwards, registered full time students who achieved a 4.0 grade average or higher in each of the previous consecutive 2 semesters may submit an application fortuition fee reduction. Please note that the 'SCHOLARSHIP INDEX' will be taken into consideration to calculate the results of grade average.
Up to 20% tuition fee reduction can be granted for a given semester to a maximum of 20% of eligible students in each semester. International Foundation Year and PhD students are not entitled to a reduced tuition fee.

Student lifestyle
Students can choose from a wide range of extra-curricular activities. The Faculties have a variety of student clubs. The Medical Athletic Club has well-equipped facilities including tennis and basketball courts, a weight room and an easily accessible swimming pool is nearby. Lovarda organizes student parties each Wednesday night. You will find a number of coffee and tea shops as well as bars, pubs and clubs offering all kinds of night time entertainment in the City Center.
Debrecen has strong cultural and artistic traditions. The Déri Museum displays the craftsmanship and life-style unique to Eastern Hungary.Modem, the largest and most up-to-date modern and contemporary art centre of the country is also located in Debrecen. The Csokonai Theatre presents professional performances all year round, and there are numerous exhibitions, festivals and cultural attractions that create rich and stimulating opportunities for relaxation and entertainment
Accommodation
Finding the best place to live is always difficult. At Debrecen University you can choose to rent dormitories or private flats. The student hostels are located in the campus area, and are primarily occupied by foreign students.
