Wellington Institute of Technology

Established in 1986, Whitireia Community Polytechnic Ltd, is a wholly-owned Crown entity subsidiary company of Te Pūkenga, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Every year we train over 4,900 students who study at one of our contemporary campuses across the Wellington region.

We offer a range of programmes of study at certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and Master’s levels. Our programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications. Our NZQA Highly Confident rating for educational performance and capability in self-assessment makes Whitireia a Category 1 institution.

Whitireia is named after the Whitireia maunga (mountain) of Titahi Bay – the mountain that Ngāti Toa identifies with, the highest mountain in their rohe.

The Wellington Institute of Technology is a tertiary institution that trains around 6,100 students every year. We offer a range of industry-led qualifications from trades through to degrees and postgraduate programmes that are future-focused, developed alongside industry and provide ākonga with practical skills so you can pursue your career goals. NZQA's latest review has given WelTec a positive rating.

WelTec is one of New Zealand's oldest tertiary education institutions and the second-oldest in Wellington. We’ve been helping people find their vocation since 1904, and in 2020 WelTec became a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga.
